ABOUT

Take the leap: teach!

Yogahour is an alignment driven flow style of yoga that is first and foremost a teaching technology; applicable to a wide variety of yoga styles and class types. For example, it’s applicable to the majority of classes offered at YogaOasis.

The primary objective of this training is threefold:
  • Hone your physical practice as well as establish/support - if you so choose - a pranayama (breathing exercises) & meditation practice.
  • Offer an immersion into esoteric teachings of yoga that inform + influence the more exoteric aspects, such as asana (the yoga poses).
  • Prepare you to hit the ground running in regards to teaching. One definition of 'hit the ground running' = to begin or proceed quickly, energetically, and effectively.

The YogaOasis 200-hour Yogahour Teacher Training is an approved 200-hour program by Yoga Alliance®. As indicated above, this registry makes you a solid candidate for teaching many expressions of yoga in a wide variety of venues.

Trainees also have the option to take the yogahour test to attain yogahour certification. That makes for two certifications in one training! You can, of course, opt not to get the yogahour certification, which requires extra homework and memorization.

Note: aplenty of practitioners have attended these trainings not for the pursuit of teaching, but rather to further explore their practice and the subject of yoga itself. In other words, the aim of teaching is not a requirement.

If you are on in a position of indecision about taking this training, perhaps try this: List 3 reasons not to take it; 3 reasons to take it. Read both lists out loud and then intuit your hearts precision-decision.

A FEW TESTIMONIALS. . .

"If you're thinking of becoming a yoga teacher, or if you're just looking to radically improve your own practice, you should seriously consider the YogaOasis Yogahour 200 hour Teacher Training class. Like the aim of yogahour itself, yogahour TT is "doable and difficult." It will challenge you, sometimes frustrate you, and occasionally may bring you to tears, but thanks to Sam Rice and Darren Rhodes, you'll embark on a journey you will never forget. Their fantastic teaching and support, as well as support from your fellow students and YogaOasis teachers and staff, combine to give you an in-depth theoretical and practical insight into yogahour's philosophy and teaching methodology. What you'll learn on this ten-month adventure will not only empower you with teaching abilities you never thought were capable of, the experience will also give you a self confidence that you never knew was within you. I did it, and the experience is open to all who are willing to try." - Ray Mendenhall

“I moved to Tucson in August of 2013 to train with Darren. Prior to moving, I had never personally met or practiced with him. I took it on good faith from one of my teachers he was the guy to learn from. Yes indeed! I have an incredible new way of looking at the world of yoga, thanks to him. Darren is a wonderful teacher, and a fearless leader of YO. Darren gives his all to each class he teaches and you can tell he really wants the best for each and every student. I am so grateful to have Darren as my teacher, and so excited for each new student that walks into his class. Sam Rice is an awesome teacher. Her classes consist of an asana-kicking workout, laughs, and complete instruction as to why we are doing the pose this way today. I really appreciate a teacher that takes charge and really leads their class. I feel like a better teacher after practicing with Sam. Her pure unwavering dedication to teaching is very apparent. I am happy to call her my teacher. These two together are amazing! Two power-house teachers that work so well together.” -Allison Johnson

“Sam can break down a pose to the tiniest detail and put it into simplistic terms so most anyone can follow along. Her expertise and creativity combine fluidly to allow incredible precision when it comes to teaching. You don't have to guess what Sam is instructing you. You-will-know. Darren Rhodes somehow finds the balance between commanding your attention and making you laugh. His teaching style is the exact same. Darren knows what he is talking about, and that's clear…just like his instructions. More importantly, he knows why he telling you something. Whether it be a teaching cue, or an esoteric story…he knows the purpose of the information he divulges. And he doesn't waste your time. Any information you can be present for when it comes to Sam and Darren is something I personally would hold on to. It's incalculable.” -Dani Schiess

“Sam Rice basically has a PhD in yoga. She is very clear, skilled, flawless and funny!!! Every single time I go to Sam's class I learn something new that changes the way I practice. Every. Single. Time. From day one, Darren Rhodes has shown me that I can do 1,000 times more than what I ever thought I could. He makes me a better yogi plain and simple. He always challenges me and is very supportive. He meets me where I'm at and at the same time shows me where I'm going.” -Annie Smith

“I contemplated taking this new step in my life for months prior to fully committing. As someone who is immersed in a demanding career, dedicated to my family and friends, and who has a tendency to double book plans every weekend, I was well aware of the sacrifices and demands necessary to complete this program. What I wasn't aware of was how much I would gain by the time it was done. I knew I wanted two things when I started the YogaHour Teacher Training; to learn more about yoga and, how to use this knowledge to help others. I definitely got what I wanted, but even more so my deeper knowledge of yoga as a practice opened the door to a greater insight into myself. This program requires a great amount of work, sweat, and sacrifice, but the most challenging facet is the introspection yoga requires of you as a practitioner. I truly could not have found two better guides and teachers for this process. Darren Rhodes and Sam Rice's knowledge of yoga is truly impressive but their vulnerability and commitment to their students was the greatest inspiration. On the first weekend of YTT, Darren told us that we would get as much out of the training as we were willing to put in. As much as I admire my teacher, I would have to disagree. The knowledge gained from Darren and Sam is immeasurable and cannot be limited to these scales. They are truly great practitioners and teachers of yoga, and they do as any great teacher should… leave you hungry for more. The memorization was brutal, and there was so much more work that needed to be put in than I expected. The mock classrooms and teaching drills were nerving and uncomfortable. The hours of asana and work shopped poses left me exhausted. And through all of this, I couldn't have asked for anything more fulfilling. For preparation as an instructor, I feel confident about my ability to lead a group practice because of the hardwork, discomfort, and tiresome commitment this program required. I could not have asked for a better stepping stone towards the serious study of yoga.”
